13th Annual Junior Youth in Policing Leadership Camp
DRPS Youth in Policing (YIP) Summer Students inspired 70 Junior YIP Campers to make a difference within their school and communities.
On August 2nd and 3rd, Youth in Policing (YIP) hosted their 13th annual Junior Youth in Policing Leadership Camp (Jr. YIP Camp) from the Kid’s Safety Village. The 70 Jr. YIP Campers (aged 10 and 13) came from across Durham Region at attend the camp. Each camper was paired with one of our 70 YIP students to participate in team building and educational activities, participate in various educational activities, interact with emergency services in the community and learn valuable leadership skills.
Campers connected with 14 DRPS officers from various units including Air Support and the Forensics Investigative Unit and connected with firefighters from the Whitby Fire Department. Each unit brought their unique equipment to show case. Both the Forensic Investigative Unit and Fire Department gave the campers a tour of their truck, while the Air Support Unit highlighted videos from the helicopter. Overall, it was an insightful experience for the campers!
At the end of the two-day camp, the YIP leadership team presented campers with a certification of completion to highlight their success and involvement throughout the camp. To recognize the values of Jr. YIP Leadership Camp three special awards were presented to the most deserving campers: Kind Camper, Team Spirit, and Outstanding Camper Award.
The campers were upset the camp was over but happy that it happened. YIP hopes to one day have these campers return as future YIP students and continue to develop their leadership skills!
YIP looks forward to hosting many more Jr. YIP Leadership Camps to continue inspiring and shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
