14th Annual Junior Youth in Policing Camp

14th Annual Junior Youth in Policing Camp

DRPS' Youth in Policing (YIP) summer students had a positive impact on 81 Junior YIP Campers, empowering them to create positive change in their schools and communities.

Between  August 8  and 10, 2023 the 14th annual Junior Youth in Policing Leadership Camp (Jr. YIP Camp) took place at the Kid’s Safety Village. Youth aged 10 to 13 from across the Durham Region registered for camp this year. Each camper teamed up with a YIP student for a journey of teamwork, learning, and leadership.

The theme for this year's camp was  L.E.A.D.: Listen, Encourage, Adapt, and Devote. Campers learned  about these values through survivor-themed activities and connected with DRPS officers from various units including:  Forensics and K9 as well as our friends from the Whitby Fire Department. Their visit allowed campers to interact with first responders and explore their equipment up close.

As the three-day adventure came to a close, all participants left with new friendships and confidence in their leadership. The YIP team hopes to see these young campers returning as future YIP students, continuing their journey of leadership.

The Youth in Policing Team looks forward to hosting more Junior Youth in Policing Camps and continuing to grow future leaders! Thanks to all who attended.
