2025 Basketball Tournament for Special Olympics

2025 Basketball Tournament for Special Olympics

On Saturday, February 8, 2025, DRPS' Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative hosted its annual Basketball Tournament for Special Olympics!

This unique tournament, which saw young athletes of all skill levels from across Durham Region, was about more than basketball. It provided a platform for youth to develop their skills, foster teamwork, and engage with their community. Teambuilding was facilitated through the active participation of YIP students, DRPS officers, and auxiliary officers, who played alongside the athletes and engaged in meaningful discussions on community impact - all while enjoying the game!

There were more than 140 attendees, including 15 athletes, their families, DRPS members, and the YIP team. Acting Deputy Chief Courneyea kicked off the tournament with welcoming remarks, followed by rotations of basketball games, drills, and activities. Athletes also had an opportunity to learn from the DRPS K9 team of D/Cst. King and Police Service Dog Klutch. The day ended with a final basketball game between the top two teams and an award ceremony to celebrate the athletes' accomplishments.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this event. Your presence and participation made the basketball tournament a truly memorable experience for all. We also want to express our deep appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the YIP team, whose efforts were instrumental in making this event a resounding success. We look forward to seeing you all at our next basketball tournament in 2026!
