Attempted Robbery of Armoured Truck in Whitby

A male is in custody after he intentionally rammed and chased an armoured truck in an SUV in Whitby.

On Friday, July 5, 2024, at approximately 1:35 a.m., members of Central West Division responded to a robbery in progress call in the area of Baldwin Street South and Winchester Road East.  An armoured truck was conducting business at a bank when an SUV intentionally collided with it.  The armoured truck left the area, however the suspect SUV continued to follow, making further attempts to ram the truck.  The armoured truck drove to the Whitby GO Station where officers located the suspect SUV.  The suspect SUV attempted to flee the area but was successfully blocked by police.  The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Further investigation determined the suspect SUV had been stolen.

No physical injuries were sustained during this incident.

Gurkirat Singh RAI, age 28 of no fixed address is charged with: Robbery, False Representation as a Peace Officer, Dangerous Operation, Flight from Peace Officer, Possess Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, Possess Schedule I Substance, and Operate a Conveyance While Prohibited x9.

He was held for a bail hearing
