Citizens’ Police Academy a success

DRPS hosted its second ever Citizens’ Police Academy which began in September 2022. The 10-week program wrapped up on November 23, 2022.  The program received 125 applicants for 25 positions.

The Durham Citizen Police Academy was created to promote and enhance the relationship between the community and our Service. It was not intended to train or encourage community members to be police officers. Instead, our hope is that by giving community insight into police services and operations, our residents will have a better understanding of the DRPS, the services we provide and the decisions we make, often in an emergency or crisis..

The academy included demonstrations, presentations and participant interactions. Topics included:

  • Use of Force
  • Traffic Services Branch demonstration
  • Member panel (a day in the life of DRPS members)
  • Recruiting Unit (practices, trends, and processes)
  • Court Services/Durham Crown Attorney’s Office (Courthouse tour)
  • Mental Health Unit, Durham Connect Team
  • Communications 911 Unit (Operational Training Centre Tour)
  • Air Support, K-9, Tactical Support, Hostage Rescue, Incident Command, Duty Office
  • Major Crimes Unit
  • Forensic Identification Unit
  • Internet Child Exploitation
  • Electronic Crimes
  • Crime Prevention
  • Community Services
  • Homicide
  • Human Trafficking

Each week participants had questions for our presenters and were engaged in all aspects of the program. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive.

“This is the best course I’ve participated in!”

“I have enjoyed all of your sessions and wish they were longer!”

“I really want to thank you again for the incredible work you did to have the class running. It has been an honor and privilege to be part of. I had some expectations before I started the program and each class was beyond my expectations.”

“Honestly I think that what has been offered to us thus far is outstanding.  I have bragged so much about DRPS since attending these sessions.  I just wish more people could be part of it.”

“…this is an amazing opportunity to learn so much more about the service including the many challenges, as well as, the determination and commitment with which the officers conduct themselves…”

We would like to thank all participants and members who presented to this session, as well as Chief Rollauer, Inspector Lamothe and Staff Sgt Lock for their attendance and ongoing support.
