Donation Fraud Investigation in Clarington
The Durham Regional Police Service Financial Crimes Unit is investigating after coupon booklets were sold door-to-door by individuals claiming that proceeds would be donated to the Clarington Flames Girls Hockey Association.
On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, members of the Financial Crimes Unit began an investigation into a group of individuals selling coupon booklets door-door in the Whitby and Bowmanville area. These individuals advised buyers that proceeds were to be donated to the Clarington Flames girls hockey team. The Clarington Flames Girls Hockey Association is not affiliated with these individuals or coupon booklets, has no partnership with this group, and has not received any donations.
The coupons were for Papa’s Pizza Land Whitby and Bowmanville locations. Papa’s Pizza Land was also falsely led to believe that the proceeds from the coupons would be donated to the Clarington Flames. Papa’s Pizza Land will continue to honour coupons already purchased.
Investigators are advising the public not to purchase coupons from any individuals claiming to be donating proceeds to the Clarington Flames, as it is unknown at this time where the funds are being sent.
Anyone who has purchased these booklets, had contact with any individuals of this group, or has any information is asked to make a report by visiting www.drps.ca.
Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
