DRPS Citizens’ Police Academy Applications Open
If you’ve ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at DRPS, the upcoming Citizens Police Academy might be for you!
DRPS will host its fourth Citizens’ Police Academy with the first class starting September 18, 2024. This 10-week program will run until November 20, 2024, with weekly classes taking place Wednesdays from 7-9:30 p.m. The program will give attendees the opportunity to see first-hand what we do and how we do it. Candidates will be introduced to numerous areas of the service and our partners within Durham Region. The academy will include demonstrations, presentations and voluntary participant interactions. Topics may include:
- The DRPS organizational structure
- Use of Force training
- Traffic Services Branch demonstration
- Member panel (a day in the life of DRPS members)
- Recruiting Unit (practices, trends, and processes)
- Courts Services (Courthouse tour)
- Mental Health Unit, Durham Connect Team
- Communications 911 Unit (Operational Training Centre Tour)
- Air Support, K-9, Tactical Support, Hostage Rescue, Incident Command, Duty Office
- Professional Standards Unit
- Major Crimes Unit
- Forensic Identification Unit
- Body-Worn Camera
The goal of the academy is to familiarize members of the public with some police practices. The Academy is a volunteer community-police engagement opportunity and is not intended to train people to be police officers. Applicants must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Live or work within Durham Region
- Complete a police security check where the DRPS will collect personal information
- Commit to a 10-week instructional program (you must complete 75% of the program to receive a certificate of program completion)
