DRPS Reminds Drivers to Slow Down as Kids Head Back to School

After an extended holiday break for students across Durham Region, DRPS wants to remind drivers to slow down and share the road as kids head back in-person learning.

With more cars on the road, you may need to add extra time to your commute so you aren’t left running late and in a rush.

Here are some tips to ensure our children are safe as they head back to school:

  1. Slow down – Especially in school zones. Obey the speed limit and remember fines can be up to double in Community Safety Zones.
  2. Avoid Distractions – Please put your mobile devices down! Keep your full attention on the road in front of you. Parents remind your children to put their mobile devices away while walking to school and to be aware of their surroundings.
  3. Always stop for school buses with lights flashing – All drivers travelling in both directions must stop for stopped school bus with its stop arm activated and red lights flashing. It is illegal to pass a bus and fines range from $400 to $2000 with six demerit points. Be patient and wait until the buses red lights and stop arm are no longer activated before attempting to pass.
  4. With the recent snowfall, snowbanks may be high - reducing visibility - another reason to slow down and be extra vigilant.

Let’s all do our part to ensure the kids have a happy and safe return to school.
