DRPS Takes the Plunge
More than 60 plungers braved the cold water (and snow) at the DRPS “Freezin for a Reason” Polar Plunge on Tuesday March 19, 2024.
The Polar Plunge is a fun opportunity to support Special Olympics Ontario athletes by taking a flying leap – into very cold water!
A giant bin was set up outside the Tribute Communities Centre in Oshawa and filled with water just before the plungers started to arrive. DRPS Police Chief Moreira welcomed everyone and Special Olympics athlete and top fundraiser Andrew Boyd was the first to take the leap.
The entire DRPS Command team followed, with Chief Moreira, Deputy Chief’s Bertrim, Kirkpatrick and Yeandle and CAO MacLellan all braving the icy water for this great cause.
Decorated Special Olympics athlete Victoria McDonald from Uxbridge also took the plunge. Being a multiple gold medalist swimmer has its advantages when braving the icy water.
A special thank you to DRPS’s entire recruit class who also plunged and raised more than $1,600 – already demonstrating their commitment to giving back before officially serving their community.
It was a fun day that has so far raised more than $25,000 to benefit Special Olympic Athletes from Durham Region. There is still time to donate. Donations will be accepted until the end of March.

Thank you to the Law Enforcement Torch Run Committee who made the event possible and to the plungers, donors and athletes who raised money for this very worthy cause.
A special thank you to the Tribute Communities Centre and the Oshawa Generals for hosting the event, and Loft House Construction for building the platform for the plungers.
