DRPS Takes the Plunge

Nearly 150 plungers braved the cold water at the DRPS “Freezin for a Reason” Polar Plunge on Saturday, March 22, 2025 in support of Special Olympics Ontario.
A pool was set up outside the Tribute Communities Centre in Oshawa and filled with water just before the plungers started to arrive. KX96 Radio Hosts Carolyn Ellis and Jerry Archer hosted the day and helped keep the plungers entertained as they waited for their moment to plunge.
DRPS Police Chief Moreira welcomed everyone and Special Olympics athlete Ella Robinson-Renaud. Ella has been a Special Olympics athlete for five years and recently represented Canada at the at the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Italy for short track speed skating. Ella won a gold and a bronze medal.
Chief Moreira was the first to brave the icy water. The entire DRPS Command team followed, with Deputy Chief’s Kirkpatrick and Yeandle, Acting Deputy Chief Courneyea and Chief’s legal counsel Vieira all taking the plunge for a great cause.
It was a fun day that has so far raised just over $40,000 to benefit Special Olympic athletes, surpassing last year’s total by more than $10,000, making it the most successful DRPS Polar Plunge to date. There is still time to donate. Donations will be accepted until the end of March.
