DRPS’ Traffic Safety Unit was recently presented with the MADD Canada National Citizen of Distinction Award presented by MADD Durham Region. The award is given to individuals and organizations who make a major contribution to the anti-impaired driving movement in Canada. DRPS’ Traffic Safety Unit was nominated buy MADD Durham Region.
“It was an absolute honour to nominate DRPS' Traffic Services Unit for MADD Canada‘s National Citizen of Distinction Award and we are so thrilled they won! It’s a reflection of the great work they do in our community to keep our roads and waterways safe. In addition to enforcement, they continue to educate the community about the dangers and consequences of driving while impaired, they understand the legislation and legal issues that may arise, and they go out of their way to advocate for and support victims and survivors of this violent crime. They are a team of dedicated individuals in the anti-impaired movement in Canada. We look forward to our continued partnership,” says Trisha Dosaj, Chapter President, MADD Durham Region.
DRPS participates in various initiatives to prevent impaired driving and provide education including:
- Tireless efforts to ensure roadways and waterways are safe, with an emphasis on impaired driving enforcement
- Partnering with community agencies: Project Red Ribbon, Project Safe Prom, Safe Boating Campaigns
- Joint RIDE lines with OPP Whitby/Toronto
- Working with MAG to stay ahead of changes to legislation and ensuring officers are equipped with the tools to combat impaired driving
- Ride Along program with prosecutors and crown attorneys to bridge the gap between street enforcement and court room outcomes
