DRPS Youth in Policing Soccer Tournament

On Wednesday, July 19, 2023 the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative joined together with the Community Development Council Durham's (CDCD) Newcomer Youth Services (NYS) to organize a highly impactful Community Soccer Tournament. This significant event catered exclusively to newcomer youth aged 14 to 24, aimed to foster meaningful connections and integration within the community.


With an impressive turnout of over 30 participants, the tournament became a platform for fostering positive relationships through sport. Throughout the day, the YIP students and newcomer youth collaborated closely, engaging in team-building activities, skill-enhancing soccer drills, and an exhilarating tournament that kept the competitive spirit alive.


DRPS Chief of Police, Peter Moreira, delivered insightful opening remarks to all participants. As a former soccer coach, Chief Moreira shared his extensive knowledge of the sport, leaving a lasting impression on the eager minds of the youth. Additionally, DRPS members showed their support by cheering on the athletes and participating in the games.


The tournament served as a testament to the transformative power of sports in bridging communities and cultivating camaraderie. By providing a platform for connecting with newcomer youth from various parts of the Region of Durham, this event showcased the importance of inclusivity.

Special thanks to Sergeant Dave Ashfield, Whitby FC, Kim Harris-Eccleston from the CDCD, and YIP Leadership Team members Victoria, Sohile, and Alex, whose invaluable contributions were pivotal in bringing this event to life.
