Junior YIP Camp
From August 12-15, the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative hosted its 15th annual Junior YIP Leadership Camp! This free camp for youth aged 10 to 13 showcased an impressive lineup of activities and educational experiences. Over four action-packed days, 93 campers enjoyed a blend of adventure, creativity, and community engagement.
With the theme of Elements, the Water, Fire, Air, Earth, and Spirit teams took course to become victorious in each competition, allowing for teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving to arise within them. Throughout the four days, the camp aimed to SPARK support, passion, ambition, respect, and kindness.
Each day brought new experiences and activities for YIP Students and Campers. Day one featured icebreakers, artwork out of newspapers, and special guests from the Canine Unit. Day two got the youth outside and exploring nature through a forest walk, an Amazing Race-styled competition, and a mock crime scene investigation with the Forensics Unit. Day three focused on problem-solving and critical thinking via a Murder Mystery activity, X-Movement presentation, and demonstrations from the DRPS Drone team and Traffic Services Unit. The final day showcased the DRPS Tactical Support Unit and allowed campers to showcase their talents and skills through “YIPs Got Talent.”
Throughout the four days, the camp was a blend of educational and recreational activities. The presence of the 21 DRPS Officers/Auxiliary was a significant highlight, enriching the campers’ experience and underscoring the importance of building relationships that foster trust and confidence within our local communities.
The camp’s success was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the organizers, volunteers, community partners, DRPS members, parents/guardians, and the enthusiastic participation of the campers. It was a week filled with laughter, learning, and lasting memories. Thank you to all who were involved!
