Officer Charged after Failing to Render Medical Assistance

A Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) officer has been arrested and charged by the DRPS Professional Standards Unit with Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life.

It is alleged that in March 2024, while attending a call for service, he failed to render medical assistance or first aid to a person in medical distress. The person was left in the care of a family member who later sought medical assistance.  The person was transported to, and subsequently released from, hospital. 

The DRPS maintains accountability with supervisory oversight which includes proactive reviews of calls for service.  During one of these reviews, an investigation was commenced into the alleged criminality.

Constable James Wright, a 23-year member of the DRPS is charged with Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life. 

He was released on an undertaking and is currently suspended from duty with pay.

The information in this media release contains facts and circumstances that have been obtained from a police investigation.  These allegations have yet to be proven in court.
