Introducing Police Service Dog Pixel

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is thrilled to welcome a new Police Service Dog (PSD) to the Internet & Child Exploitation Unit (ICE). Detective Constable Samantha Mayhew and PSD Pixel have completed their electronic storage detection (ESD) training and certification, and have been deployed for duty.

PSD Pixel is a nine-month-old Chocolate Labrador Retriever who was born in the United States. She was donated by OUR Rescue; a global not-for-profit organization leading the fight against child sexual exploitation and human trafficking worldwide, for the purpose of assisting with child exploitation investigations by searching/sniffing out electronic storage devices which are used by offenders to store child sex abuse material. She originally underwent training to become a service dog, however it became clear early on that her energy level was better suited for a different calling and she was selected to be trained as an ESD K9 by Jordan Detection K9 in Indiana. There, she underwent intensive training, after which she and Detective Constable Mayhew were certified in the detection of electronic storage devices.

Pixel is one of only four ESD K9's being used by police services in Canada. She is trained to detect a chemical found on electronics that are capable of storing data. She has already been deployed during three warrants and detected a well hidden device that otherwise would not have been seized. With her service dog training, she has also been able to provide support to victims and family members during the investigations.

“Pixel is still a puppy and does get the zoomies which are always followed by a much needed nap. But when duty calls, she is focused and intense. On her days off, Pixel enjoys snuggles, walks, and spending time with her family. I would like to thank OUR Rescue and Jordan Detection K9 for their role in her training and development. We in ICE are so excited about our newest addition and are looking forward to seeing the difference she makes. By finding these devices, Pixel will help us in arresting those responsible, but more importantly helping victims who otherwise may have never been found,” says D/Cst. Mayhew.

Welcome Pixel and thank you for your service.
