Police Chief for a Day Contest: Call for Essays

Attention All Aspiring Young Leaders!

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is excited to announce the 21st annual Police Chief for a Day Contest! This is your chance to step into the shoes of DRPS Police Chief Peter Moreira and experience what its like to lead our dedicated members. We are looking for bright and passionate students to share their ideas on how to enhance community safety and well-being.

On September 26, 2024, the top Grade 5 finalists from various school boards across Durham Region will attend DRPS headquarters. They will read their winning essays to a community panel of judges, including Chief Peter Moreira, members of the Police Services Board and members of the Police Appreciation Dinner and Awards Night (PADAN) Committee.

Contest Details:

  • Who Can Enter: Students entering Grade 5 in September 2024, at a school in Durham Region
  • Essay Topic: "What would you do if you were Police Chief for a day?"
  • Word Limit: 500 words.
  • Deadline: Tuesday September 17, 2024.

Prize:

  • Grand Prize: Serve as Police Chief for a Day on Tuesday October 22, 2024! You will be fitted for a full DRPS uniform and experience a day in the life of our Police Chief, including being sworn in, visiting different police units, and meeting members from across the Service. The winner will also be a guest of honour at the 21st annual PADAN on October 24, 2024 at Deer Creek in Ajax. The 2024 Chief for a Day will also participate in other DRPS events through-out the year including the DRPS Food & Toy Drive, Police Week, and other events.

How to Enter:

  1. Write Your Essay: Address the topic creatively and thoughtfully. Be sure to include specific ideas and strategies.
  2. Submit Your Essay: Send your essay to chiefforaday@drps.ca Be sure to include your full name, the name of the school, the city the school is in and the school board the student attends Deadline: Ensure your essay is submitted by Tuesday September 17, 2024.
