The Passing of Retired PSD Hemmi
It is with great sadness that the DRPS' Durham Regional Police K9 Unit announces the passing of retired Police Service Dog (PSD) Hemmi. PSD Hemmi passed away at the age of fifteen years over the weekend.
PSD Hemmi served the citizens of Durham region for over 10 years and was handled by D/Cst Corby Wright.
PSD Hemmi was trained in general patrol and was crossed-trained in bomb detection.
During his celebrated career, PSD Hemmi was responsible for locating hundreds of individuals including wanted criminal offenders, missing vulnerable people and individuals suffering from mental health issues.
PSD Hemmi was known for his incredible hard surface tracking ability. and was one of the K9 Unit's most methodical, detailed trackers, often being observed licking the ground in an attempt to detect the best scent to improve his tracking reliability.
Hemmi was also known for his ability to run at high speeds. During training, members of the team radared Hemmi running at an amazing 57 kms.hr.
PSD Hemmi will be greatly missed by D/Cst Wright, his family and the DRPS K9 Unit.
