Torch Run Raises Money for Special Olympics

Nearly 70 DRPS members and Special Olympics athletes laced up to raise money for Special Olympics Ontario in the 37th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Participants ran a five kilometre route through Whitby and were greeted by Chief Moreira when they returned to Durham Regional Headquarters. Chief Moreira thanks the organizing committee and was joined by two incredible athletes, Jessica and Ryan, who were happy to share their stories about the impact Special Olympics has had on their lives. Jessica, who has competed in various Special Olympics sports over the last 25 years thanked everyone for participating. Ryan, who has been involved with Greater Durham Special Olympics for more than 10 years shared how participating in basketball, track and field and softball has made him more confident in all areas of life.

Following the speeches, lunch was provided by the Progress Club. All funds raised will go directly to Special Olympics.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics is recognized as the official charity of choice of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. It is the largest public awareness vehicle and grass-roots fundraiser for Special Olympics, globally. In Ontario alone, more than $46 million has been raised since its inception, making it one of the most profitable torch runs in the world.

We would like to thank the following sponsors, Durham Region Transit who provided a bus and driver to assist with the run, the Progress Club for providing lunch and Foodland for providing water and snacks for the runners.
