Two Firearms Seized Following Collision in Whitby
Five youth are facing charges after two firearms and prohibited magazines were seized after a collision in Whitby.
On Monday, August 12, 2024, members of Central West Division initiated a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle in the area of Winchester Road West and Thornton Road North. The suspect vehicle failed to stop for police and fled the area. Police disengaged immediately and did not pursue the vehicle. A short time later the suspect vehicle was located in a ditch after being involved in a collision. Two firearms with prohibited extended magazines were recovered from the vehicle and its occupants.
Three occupants were transported to a local area hospital for minor injuries. A fourth occupant was transported to a Toronto area trauma centre for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate. DRPS is fully cooperating with the SIU and cannot release further details on this incident.
Five youth are facing numerous charges including: Flight from Peace Officer, Possess Restricted/Prohibited Firearm, Possess Prohibited Ammunition, Occupy Motor Vehicle with Firearm, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance, Drive Motor Vehicle No Licence, Use Plate Not Authorized for Vehicle, Operate Motor Vehicle Without Insurance, Possession Contrary to Order, and Fail to Comply with Release Order.
