UPDATE #1 Donation Fraud Investigation in Clarington

The Financial Crimes Unit are continuing to appeal for anyone to come forward who purchased booklets supporting the Clarington Flames Hockey Association from an older male.

On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, members of the Financial Crimes Unit began an investigation into a group of individuals selling coupon booklets door-door in the Whitby and Bowmanville area.   At this stage of the investigation, it is believed the coupon books were sold in 2023 as well as 2024 and there have been over 1000 booklets sold.

The booklets were also being sold at Maplefest and as of last week they were being sold in the Aspen Springs area in Bowmanville.

The Clarington Flames Girls Hockey Association is not affiliated with this male.  The coupon books are legit coupon books; however, the proceeds are not ending up with the Clarington Flames and the male is not acting on behalf of the organization.

He is described as: Male, White, 50’s, 5’9”, heavy build, walks with a limp and usually has a cane.

Anyone who may have been defrauded by this male or who has any information about this or similar incidents is asked to contact Det. Chapman of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5352.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
