YIP Students Help With Parasport Games

On Saturday February 4, the 2022-2023 Winter Youth in Policing students assisted in Durham Region’s 2023 Ontario Parasport Games!

The Parasports Games is an event that has athletes of many backgrounds and abilities compete in various sports. This event was held over three days commencing with the Opening Ceremony on the 3, the Competition Day on February 4, and the Closing Ceremony on February 5.

The 70 students and 13 members of the YIP leadership volunteered at various venues holding the competitions. The locations included the Abilities Centre with 29 students assisting in Sitting Volleyball;  J Clarke Richardson Collegiate with 18 students assisting in Goalball; Durham College/Ontario Tech University with 18 students assisting in Wheelchair Basketball, and the Oshawa Curling Club with 15 students assisting in Visually Impaired Curling.

Members of the YIP team assisted in the opening and closing ceremonies, in which they had the honour to carry out the medals for presentation. All studets took roles unfamiliar to them and persevered through new experiences as a group to help make this event ‘#Paramazing’.

Thank you to all those who attended and gave their time to this incredible event. Without the teamwork and hard work of the DRPS Youth in Policing Team, the GOC members, Program Coordinator Cynthia Nimri, Supervising Team Leader Jeevika Selvakumar, Team Leader Nolan Adams and his team the Para-Yip, the event would not have been the success it was.

The YIP program continues to make incredible strides with youth involvement in the community with a variety of initiatives. The YIP program will be hiring for the 2023 Summer Initiative starting in February, so check out www.drps.ca./yip for more information, email us at youthinpolicing@drps.ca or visit our social media at drps_yip.
